How to Wrap Your Hands for Boxing

The short answerHook the loop over your thumb, wrap the wrist a few times, cross over the back of the hand, wrap the knuckles, weave between the fingers, then finish back at the wrist. Snug, never tight.

Why wrap your hands

Wraps hold the small bones and joints of your hand and wrist together under the glove. They give you a firmer fist and more support every time you hit the bag.

At West 85th, wraps are available at the studio and a coach will help you with them before your first class.

Step by step

  1. Spread your fingers and hook the thumb loop over your thumb, with the wrap running over the back of your hand.
  2. Wrap around your wrist three or four times for support.
  3. Go diagonally across the back of your hand and wrap around your knuckles three times.
  4. Weave the wrap between each pair of fingers, coming back to the wrist after each one.
  5. Cross back over the knuckles once more, then finish with the remaining wrap around the wrist and close the strap.

Common mistakes

  • Too tight. If your fingers tingle or change colour, unwrap and start again.
  • Fingers closed while wrapping. Keep them spread so the wrap isn't too tight when you make a fist.
  • Skipping the wrist. The wrist wraps are where most of the support comes from.
  • Wet wraps. Hang them to dry after every class.

Still not sure? Ask any coach before class. We wrap hands every day.
